place as a country if they knew what the american people wanted. they will win elections from time to time in the near future but unless they change their stances on issues, unless they come around to issues that are popular with young people and single people and women and gay people and people of color -- >> stephanie: most carbon-based life forms. >> yeah unless they come around on those issues in 15 years there won't be a republican party like it looks today. >> they are in touch with white people in their 90s. >> right. >> stephanie: mark levin. >> there are certain things in his executive orders that are un-american. doctors are private citizens. do we really want doctors reporting to the federal government if they think somebody might have violent tendencies? do we really want to discourage people who have mental health

i think the number one thing that viewers like about the young turks is that we're honest. they know that i'm not bs'ing them with some hidden agenda, actually supporting one party or the other. when the democrats are wrong, they know that i'm going to be the first one to call them out. they can question whether i'm right, but i think that the audience gets that this guy, to the best of his ability, is trying to look out for us.

when -- i went to those congressmen down in that area phil powe, from texas, brady from texas, and i said how can you do this? i mean come on. one part of the country isn't more valuable than the other part of though country. needless to say they voted no. you know, they know i'm ticked off, and i'm making a list and checking it now what can i tell ya. >> stephanie: yeah and governor christie made that point. a lot of those states you put in so much more than you take out. >> absolutely. >> stephanie: you know, he said something yesterday, he said there simply isn't enough time between now and the 4th of july for every business to be up and running again, what we're hoping to do is to make the jersey shore functional and livable

again. well, as your colleague pointed out that wouldn't have been the case if we would have gotten them help on time. >> yeah and when we did katrina, how many new jersey police officers and firefighters went down to help on the second day. we voice voted 1/6th -- 1/5th of the money out of the chute for katrina. and the point i make over and over again, is look it would add to the deficit whether you were north of south, it doesn't matter. we have only paid for a small amount in terms of offsets for any of these storms. from 2003 to now, in 2003 we

like saadam hussein, and using children as human shields. >> yeah, they will stop at nothing. we have more ideologues now in the congress than we had in the 112th congress. the president got reelected. we picked up ten seats in the house. that's great. we have more ideologues now, the people replaced fairly moderate republicans, and now we have to deal with a whole bunch of them. and they just see and have -- you know have tunnel vision, they want -- they want to give in an echo chamber, and they think they are right on everything else. so these next two years are not going to be any easier than the last two years. this is their mantra they are afraid to look over their shoulder to fear that somebody

representative, i think one of the victims -- or excuse me -- i think it's a sandy hook parent i think made the point best. he said we have got to do something different. >> yes. >> stephanie: you can't just say this happened and we're going to do the same thing. >> congress is pretty good at doing the same thing over and over again and not accomplishing anything. >> stephanie: it's your bag, baby. >> i know, and i do think that we can -- look we want reasonable reform. there is no need to put the terror propaganda out there, that this is the begin of what the president wants to do. first they take away your guns and there's all conspiracy here which of course we have meetings on late into the night, really clandestine. i mean, these guys are living in reality tv. i have to deal with reality in

my district. i have to deal with young kids being shot intentionally or unintentionally on the streets. and guns that have had their numbers filed down. these are guns that are coming over our borders. i believe we have to stop that trafficking of weapons. >> stephanie: yep. >> we started to stop the trafficking of weapons from the united states to mexico. >> stephanie: right. >> when i was in homeland security, you couldn't believe the resistance of looking into weapons that were leaving the united states and going into mexico. now why would we want -- why would we want to stop -- not want to stop that trafficking whether it was drugs or -- or weaponry into mexico, since we have stomped it down to the ground as much as we could anyway. >> stephanie: and look at how

new york got done on gun control. how quickly and in a bipartisan way. >> you have got to do the work beforehand. cuomo wouldn't have brought it up -- he didn't bring it up the legislature brought it up, but he approved it. in congress we kind of work like backwards many times. we go from the top and then it comes down to the members, and that's not the way to do it. we do that on that lot of subjects. i think the president has done the right thing to talk to those who were first affected. >> stephanie: yeah. >> what the hell did they do wrong? >> yeah. >> i agree with the nra on the subject of mental illness, but these are the guys that stopped us from trying to get equity in terms of mental illness on a parity of physical problems and

physical illnesses. it took people like kennedy who just left the congress from rhode island. he worked 15 years to get that done, and we all supported that effort, and it was a bipartisan effort in the final analysis and we have to continue down that path. many people are out there who are allowed to buy weapons, and they have real deep problems. we all have problems and -- do different degrees, and we should be trying to help each other, and you have got to establish a network to do that. >> stephanie: that's right. >> i agree with that. i think we should do a tremendous amount of soul searching about who is allowed to buy weapons. >> stephanie: absolutely. >> there is no silver bullet here -- sorry to use that expression -- but there is no

silver bullet. i see it every day. how many kids have been shot down? and you go to the funeral and see these poor mothers and fathers. and what do you say? >> stephanie: yeah. what do you say when you see this picture of grace the little girl that painted the president in his study, and she wanted to be a painter -- >> i can't look at it too long. >> stephanie: exactly. and you sound like a tough guy that doesn't cry all the time. >> i have lived in the city all of my life. i was the mayor of my city. i know what gun violence is all about. i lead the way when the governor got a ban on assault weapons. the abuse that he took stephanie was similar to the abuse that president obama has faced. similar to the abuse that carolyn mccarthy has had to

face. but if you believe in something, you have got to do it. >> stephanie: representative good point. what kind of country do we live in where you can turn on your tv and mr. carol mccarthy is on you go oh, there has begun violence somewhere. >> yeah she has become our face in many ways. and yet she reached out -- she reached out, for instance several times during the passage -- we came in to the congress at the same time, we're in our 17th year in the congress, and we talked and talked to people from all sides of the aisle. i was there when carolyn talked to mr. denkins -- mr. dingel rather from michigan, the dean of the congress. he is a great gun advocate and

support's obama's gun plans but not the nra. the largest teacher's union said they are wholeheartedly behind president obama's proposal. it came a day after the [ inaudible ] issued a statement [ inaudible ] -- the nra proposed arming educators and volunteer security guards and private security personnel. this was a program that was funded to put actual police officers in schools after they received adequate training. there is a huge distinction to police officers who are wanted in a community, as opposed to being forced to have the police officers in their schools. it's based on a clinton era law.

and they went on to say if you look at sheriff arpaio in arizona, he's talking about volunteer posses that a far cry from a trained officer, and also become really a part of the school staff and every single adult in the school building really becomes part of one team. new york state has now passed the first new gun control law since the shooting in connecticut. a new poll shows today it is popular with new york voters. a ban on high-capacity magazines, and a requirement to report potentially harmful behavior of the mentally ill. pollsters say they conducted the survey both before and after governor cuomo made his provisions public meaning that people who were surveyed were voting for the measures and not for the man. a "new york times" poll out today shows that 92% of americans support universal background checks for people who want to buy guns. that includes republicans, gun owners, and 85% of households who say someone in their home with a member of the nra.
